Conversation with Twin Cities Pride

The recent May 12th Allyship Lunch Hour with Twin Cities Pride offered a grounded and deeply human conversation on mutual aid, safety, and collective care in the face of increasing ICE presence and political hostility toward marginalized communities. Centering lived experience, the discussion highlighted how grassroots networks have stepped in to meet urgent needs through rapid response systems, resource distribution, and community-based protection strategies.

Last winter, the organization became a hub for food collection after it quickly pivoted from its winter fundraiser to collecting donations for families in need. Executive Director Andi Otto shared how the organization's work demonstrates what responsive, relationship-based community care looks like in practice. Organizing efforts must be rooted in trust, accessibility, and immediacy – all of which were central to the work they did in the midst of ICE raids.

While Andi emphasized the importance of building systems that allow people to feel supported in moments of crisis. His reflections underscored that mutual aid is not simply an emergency response; it is an ongoing commitment to showing up for one another consistently, particularly for communities most impacted by systemic neglect. He encouraged participants to think critically about what allyship looks like beyond statements of support, especially during moments of fear, instability, and targeted enforcement.

Throughout the conversation, attendees engaged with questions around sustainability, burnout, and how organizations and individuals can move from passive solidarity into meaningful action. The session ultimately served as both a call to action and a reminder that resilience is built collectively.

Thank you, Andi, for taking the time to meet with us! If you live in the Twin Cities, we encourage you to attend one of the organization's events or volunteer. And no matter where you are, please consider a donation! Learn more about Twin Cities Pride: https://tcpride.org/
